Do you ever use props in your presentations? (PowerPoint slides don’t count)

In the entertaining and educational video below, Jim Emery, voice and speech coach (vocaljim.com), demonstrates why and how to use props in your presentations. This training was recorded during a PowerTalk Toastmasters meeting.

If you seldom use props, you may want to consider a few benefits. Props are:

  • Concrete–they can make an abstract concept come alive
  • Unexpected–they will be memorable and make you stand
  • Evocative–they may evoke memories and trigger emotions (including laughter)

Use props that are:

  1. Relevant to your message
  2. Not offensive
  3. Big enough for the entire audience to see
  4. Small enough for you to easily handle
  5. A value-add for your presentation
